Applying points against rent returns barely more than half a cent each, portal travel redeems at a fixed higher rate, and transfers to airline and hotel partners return close to four times the rent rate at our current estimate. For a renter who has accumulated a large balance over a year of payments, that spread is the whole game: the same points that shave a modest amount off next month's rent could instead cover a transfer-partner flight worth several times as much.
